Hook & Ladder Company -- Hartford, CT

Our friends Dan and Jaime took us here for dinner. This place seems to put more effort into its firehouse theme – cutesy menu names, décor, the waiters all dressed in fireman’s suspenders – than they do in the food. The offerings are pretty dull: Burgers, steaks, various piles of meat and cheese. My chicken burger seemed to have been sat on, and though Bill liked his steak, he thought the macaroni and cheese it came with was awful. Bill and Jaime also split the raspberry tart for dessert, which they agreed was terrible, like a glob of jelly and crumbs.

But I have to hand it to Hook and Ladder on their sweet potato fries: They hit just the right combination of sweet and salty. I ate every last one, which I never do with French fries.
